An anthem

I will not play

Gently and meekly

by the rules.

Don’t you dare

Place me in a square,

Some kindly woman

To be cared for and chaste.

I will be my self

And own that with pride.

I will not be the pawn

You wish to play

In your game of men.

In my eyes I am only

A woman,

a woman

who has been empowered

To walk away from men

And the role they

Have so meagerly

Assumed of me.

Men have shown me-

my shame

my hysteria

my falls

And with these

I have done

Nothing but

Erect

The Spring of my Strength.
